Frase and Scalenut split on one point for this job. Frase includes a REST API, webhooks, an MCP server and a CLI on every plan, while Scalenut says it does not offer an API and documents no MCP server, so only Frase can be wired into scripts and AI assistants. DeepSmith automates inside the product with Autowrite and opens its data outside it through a read-only REST API, a 23-tool MCP server and signed webhooks, so a team can run production hands-off and still pull visibility and content data into its own systems.
If you want content work to run without someone clicking through an app, the first thing to check is whether the tool can be reached from outside. Frase vs Scalenut for automation comes down to that, because the two differ more on API access, MCP support and workflow automation than on writing features. This page covers that one job. DeepSmith belongs on the shortlist too, since it automates production inside the product and exposes its data through its own API and MCP server. The full Frase vs Scalenut comparison covers everything else.
Frase vs Scalenut for automation: the short answer
- Choose DeepSmith if you want articles to write themselves on a schedule and also want AI visibility, Content Map and content data in your own tools, with plans from $99 a month and a 7-day free trial.
- Choose Frase if you want to script the tool itself, with a REST API, webhooks, an MCP server and a CLI included from the $49 monthly Starter plan.
- Choose Scalenut if your work stays inside the app and you value guided writing and optimization over outside access, since it documents no public API or MCP server.

Frase

Frase is an SEO and AI-search content platform that researches, drafts, scores, publishes and monitors content. For automation it is the more open of the two. The REST API has more than 50 endpoints plus webhooks, a hosted MCP server connects it to Claude, ChatGPT, Codex and Cursor, and a CLI covers the terminal, all on every plan. A built-in Frase Agent also runs the research, draft, score and publish sequence from plain-language requests, with autonomy settings for each content type. Frase says Zapier, Make and n8n work through the API and webhooks.
The limits are practical ones. API, MCP and CLI requests share a monthly allowance of 5,000 on Starter, 20,000 on Professional and 50,000 on Scale, and API runs also use the credits of the task they run. A no-code workflow builder that you design yourself is not described. Much of the current product is also recent, since the platform was rebuilt in February 2026 and the hosted MCP server shipped between April and September 2026, so there is little long-run evidence yet. Reviewers rate Frase 4.8/5 on G2 from 310 reviews, and the complaints center on uneven AI writing quality and usage limits.
Scalenut

Scalenut is an AI SEO writing and optimization suite that now bundles AI answer tracking and sells an optional managed GEO service. For a team working inside the app it offers a guided Cruise Mode writer, SERP-based keyword clusters, a live GEO and SEO score, and tools that deploy changes, such as the AI Link Manager and WordPress and Shopify publishing on Plus and up.
Outside the app the picture is thin. Its help center states that Scalenut currently does not offer an API, no MCP server is documented, and a Zapier, Slack or BI connector could not be verified. Automation shows up as fixed guided workflows. The AI agents described on its homepage run inside the managed VIP Service, where Scalenut's team operates them for you, and the sales-led Enterprise tier offers a custom AI pipeline. Plans are Starter at $59, Plus at $89 and Professional at $199 a month. On G2 it is rated 4.7/5 from 315 reviews, and reviewers praise ease of use while some report repetitive drafts and usage limits.
DeepSmith: the alternative that automates inside the product and opens its data outside it

Frase gives the pair its outside access, and Scalenut documents none. DeepSmith puts automation in two places, so a team gets hands-off production and a data feed it can build on.
Inside the product, Autowrite handles the production. You configure an article at planning time, and it writes itself on its scheduled date using the persona, voice, content type and link targets you stored, then lands in Produced Content with no one in the app. From there you review and publish straight to WordPress, Webflow, Strapi, Sanity or Contentful, or to your own webhooks.

Outside the product, the REST API gives read access to the workspace with scoped keys. It covers AI visibility (mention rate, citation rate, share of voice, per-platform results, the competitor leaderboard, cited sources, prompts and the AI answers themselves), the Content Map, the content library including article bodies, and Deep IQ assets. It allows 120 requests per minute per workspace, reads spend no credits, and an OpenAPI spec is published. The MCP server exposes 23 read-only tools to Claude, Claude Code, Microsoft Copilot, Perplexity, Cursor, VS Code, Windsurf, Gemini CLI, Codex, Zed, Raycast and JetBrains AI Assistant, with one URL and an API key per workspace.

Webhooks close the loop. They send HMAC-SHA256 signed callbacks for content status changes, Opportunity Agent runs, agent tasks and Deep IQ analysis, with automatic retries and a delivery log, so your own publishing or downstream workflows can react. The API and MCP server read workspace data and do not create content, and webhooks notify rather than publish, so writing and publishing run through Autowrite and Produced Content. Plans are Pro at $99 a month ($80 billed annually), Grow at $199 and Scale at $399, with a 7-day free trial and no long-term contracts.
Frase vs Scalenut API and MCP access
Frase is the clear winner here, because Scalenut documents neither an API nor an MCP server.
On Frase, the API covers content and briefs, SERP analysis, AI visibility, site audits, topic research and analytics, returns JSON, and supports webhooks. The hosted MCP server is listed in the Claude connector directory and also ships as an npm package, according to Frase's documentation. On Scalenut, the help center says it "currently does not offer an API," and nothing in the material reviewed mentions an MCP server. If a script or an AI assistant needs to reach the tool, only one of the two supports it today.
What DeepSmith does: the REST API and the MCP server are read-only, and they carry the data that matters to a content pipeline, from AI answers and citation rates to Content Map topics and article text. An assistant can analyze visibility, competitors and your content library in conversation, and a script can pull the same data on a schedule.
Workflow automation and publishing
Frase wins this axis, with one point to check before you buy.
The Frase Agent can run research, drafting, scoring and publishing on its own inside a quality bar and a monthly cap, and it can write up to 10 articles from briefs in one batch. Calendar scheduling publishes to a connected CMS. Frase's pricing page says auto-publish is on every plan, while its autonomy page says it is part of higher plans, so confirm which applies to the plan you want. Scalenut offers guided steps, such as Cruise Mode and the cluster-to-article flow, and its WordPress Publisher can schedule and publish drafts, with auto-publish to WordPress and Shopify on Plus and up. Writing on a schedule without manual steps is not described.
What DeepSmith does: Autowrite writes each article on its planned date from your stored brand context, and the finished article can go to your CMS or to your own webhook endpoint. Planning, writing and review sit in one system, so the schedule is the only thing you maintain.
From insight to action
Frase wins for a team building its own pipeline, because the data leaves the app, and Scalenut's tools act on gaps only inside it.
Frase tracks AI visibility daily across up to five engines depending on plan, and its API includes AI visibility and site audit endpoints, so those results can feed a dashboard or a script. Scalenut tracks ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews weekly on its standard plans, adds Perplexity on Professional, and pairs the results with recommendations and fix tools such as Auto Optimization on Plus and up. Those results stay in the app, and a WordPress draft export is the nearest thing to a data export that its documentation describes.
What DeepSmith does: Opportunity Agents read your AI visibility and Content Map data and return ideas with the data point that justifies each one. Those ideas move through New Ideas and Planned Content into Autowrite, and webhooks report each agent run, so the step from insight to a published piece does not depend on someone carrying data between tools.
Pricing and request limits
Frase gives you more automation for the money, since its API is included from the $49 monthly Starter plan, while Scalenut has no API at any price.
Frase costs $49, $129 and $299 a month on Starter, Professional and Scale, or $39, $103 and $239 billed yearly, with request allowances of 5,000, 20,000 and 50,000 a month. Scalenut costs $59, $89 and $199 a month, and shows annual offers of $24, $36 and $80 as limited 60% discounts. The Scalenut annual price is lower on paper, but nothing at any tier opens the product to outside tools.
What DeepSmith does: reads through the API and MCP server spend no credits, and the limit is a steady 120 requests per minute per workspace, so a reporting job does not eat into your article allowance. Pro includes 20 articles a month and 50 tracked prompts, and Grow and Scale raise both.
Which should you choose
Whether you land on Frase or Scalenut for automation depends mostly on whether anything has to leave the app.
- DeepSmith fits a content or marketing team that wants production to run on a schedule without anyone in the app, and also wants its AI visibility, Content Map and content data available to its own scripts, dashboards and AI assistants.
- Frase fits a team or agency that wants to script the tool itself, using its API, MCP server and CLI to run research and drafting from outside, and that is comfortable with a shared monthly request allowance.
- Scalenut fits a small team writing English SEO content that works inside the app, wants guided writing and optimization at a low entry price, and does not need to connect other systems.
