Jasper vs Byword: Pros and Cons for Earning Citations in AI Answers

Avinash Saurabh

Two stacks of layered document cards joined by thin lines to a central answer bubble, with the cover line Jasper vs Byword: AI Citations.

For earning citations in AI answers, Jasper is the stronger of the two. It has agents for AI-answer optimization and a GEO Hub that tracks ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity, though that tracking sits in a quote-only Business plan. Byword is built for publishing volume and has no native AI-answer tracking. DeepSmith tracks the pages AI cites and writes the content that closes the gaps, on self-serve plans from $99 a month.

Choosing between Jasper vs Byword for AI search comes down to two questions. Can the tool prepare a page so an AI engine is likely to cite it, and can you see which of your pages actually get cited afterward? Jasper does both, with conditions on the plan. Byword does both only in part and is built around publishing volume. This page covers only that one job, and the full comparison of cost at volume is a separate page. DeepSmith covers both on plans you can start without a sales call.

Jasper vs Byword for AI search: the short answer

  • Choose DeepSmith if you want to see which pages AI cites, find the gaps, and have publish-ready articles written for them, with tracking from $99 a month on a self-serve plan.
  • Choose Jasper if you are a marketing department on a custom Business contract and want AI-answer optimization agents and citation tracking inside the same workspace as your other content.
  • Choose Byword if you publish many search articles through campaigns or programmatic templates, and you are fine measuring AI citations with a separate tool.

Jasper

Jasper is an agent-based workspace for marketing content from Jasper AI, Inc., and it added AI search visibility in mid-2026. For citations it offers a set of AI-answer agents, including an AI Readiness Score that rates direct answer clarity, structure and citation potential, plus Citable Claims, Fact Density Audit, Schema Markup and FAQ Generator agents. Its GEO Hub tracks brand presence, citation rate, share of voice and sentiment across ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity.

The GEO Hub is part of the Business plan, which is quoted case by case and runs on a platform fee plus credits, at 10 credits per query or page run. Pro costs $69 per seat per month for one user and does not include it. Jasper's own pages leave the collection method, locations and model versions undocumented, and Google AI Overviews is not among the engines.

Reviewers like the drafting speed and brand voice, and also report that output often needs editing. Jasper holds 4.7/5 on G2 from 1,307 reviews and 3/5 on Trustpilot from 4,141, checked on September 30, 2026.

Byword

Byword is a self-serve AI article writer from London-based Byword AI Ltd. It researches keywords, drafts articles one at a time, in campaigns, or from programmatic templates, and publishes to WordPress, Webflow, Ghost, HubSpot and Medium. Plans are public and priced per article, from $99 a month for 25 articles to $999 a month for 300.

On AI answers, the record is thin. Byword's own documentation mentions AI citations only in its MCP server docs, which describe a loop for defending AI visibility and a prompt to check citations. No method for optimizing a page for AI answers is documented. The site points to a separate product, Trakkr, for AI visibility, and no engines are monitored natively.

Independent reviews are few. G2 shows 3.5/5 from 3 reviews and Trustpilot 2.8/5 from 7, and the most recent are from mid-2025, so the sample says little. Its strength is volume, and the documented limitation for this job is the missing tracking.

DeepSmith: the alternative that tracks citations and writes the pages

Jasper already matches DeepSmith on the idea of tracking, so the difference worth looking at is the terms. Jasper's tracking comes with a custom Business contract and credit-metered runs. Byword has none of its own. DeepSmith puts tracking and production on one plan with a published price: Pro is $99 a month with ChatGPT tracking, 50 tracked prompts and 20 articles a month. Grow is $199 and adds Perplexity, and Scale is $399 and adds Gemini. Enterprise covers all ten engines. A 7-day free trial is available, with no long-term contracts.

The AI Visibility module reports mention rate, citation rate and share of voice, per prompt and per platform, with the full answer history. Its Pages view shows which of your pages AI actually cites, each page's share of your citations, and the prompts driving them. Competitor citations show who wins your prompts and on which exact pages. Opportunity Agents read that data and return content ideas, each carrying the data point that justifies it, including agents for turning mentions into citations and for taking a competitor's citations.

From there the Writer produces a finished, brand-grounded article with AEO formatting built in, internal and external links, a cover image and metadata. Autowrite can write it on a scheduled date, and Produced Content publishes to WordPress, Webflow, Strapi, Sanity or Contentful. DeepSmith is SOC 2, GDPR and ISO certified and rated 4.8/5 on G2.

Preparing pages for AI citation

Jasper is ahead here, since it documents a method and Byword does not. Jasper's agents check things that plausibly matter to answer engines, such as how directly a page answers a question, how dense it is with checkable facts, and whether it has schema and FAQ markup. Whether those checks raise citation rates for any given site is not something either vendor's pages show, so it is safest to read the scores as a checklist.

Byword's optimization is aimed at search rankings. Its Optimize feature compares a page with the top ten results and suggests changes to headings, length and meta text, and it can sync Google Search Console. That is useful work for ranking, and for citations the record marks it as partial.

What DeepSmith does: AEO formatting is native to the Writer, so each article comes with citation-ready structure, crisp answers near the top and clear headings from the first draft. The visibility agents then target specific tracked prompts, so the page is written for a question you know matters.

Seeing what gets cited

Jasper wins this one clearly. The GEO Hub reports brand presence, citation rate, share of voice and sentiment on four engines, on a daily, weekly or monthly schedule, and it can group tracked queries into topic clusters with coverage scores. The limits are the plan and the credits. It is Business only, each query or page run costs 10 credits, and a report covers up to 10 competitors and 1,000 pages.

Byword has no tracker of its own. Its MCP server can expose AI-search citation data and a snapshot that includes Trakkr data, so a team that already uses Trakkr can pull that into an assistant. Without a separate tool, you would not see which pages get cited.

What DeepSmith does: it reports which of your pages AI cites, how many citations each earns, and the exact prompts behind them, along with the competitor pages winning citations you do not have. That is on the same plan that writes the content.

Cost and access for the citation job

Byword is clearer on published price, and Jasper is the only one of the two that includes tracking. Byword's plans are listed openly, from $99 a month for 25 articles, but none of them measure AI citations. Jasper's Pro plan at $69 per seat has no GEO Hub, so tracking needs Business, which starts with a 12-month commitment and a price you get from sales.

For a marketing lead who wants to know the all-in cost before a first call, that means a gap either way. Byword lists its price openly and leaves measurement to another purchase. Jasper bundles measurement behind a quote.

What DeepSmith does: the price is on the page. Tracking and article production share each plan, from $99 a month, and you can check it with a free trial before paying.

From insight to action

Jasper is the better of the two on connecting what it measures to what it produces. Its GEO Hub recommends pages to optimize and net-new topics to originate, and the Optimize recommendations can be pushed into Grid with one click. Jasper's own GEO materials send the resulting drafts to a human review step. Grid is Business only and costs 10 credits per row. Byword's route to volume is campaigns from keyword lists and programmatic templates that fill variables from CSV data, with scheduled generation and direct publishing, so it moves fast once you know what to write. Nothing in what Byword offers tells you what to write for AI answers.

What DeepSmith does: the loop is one system. AI Visibility finds the prompts where you are missing or losing, Opportunity Agents turn those into ideas with the evidence attached, and they land in New Ideas. Planned Content sets the date, the Writer produces the publish-ready article, and Autowrite can take it to published without anyone in the app. Agents can also target a competitor's citations before the content is written.

Which should you choose

  • DeepSmith: you want to track where AI cites you, find the gaps, and produce the articles to close them in one place, on a plan you can start today. It fits content and marketing teams and agencies, and each workspace has its own plan.
  • Jasper: you are a mid-size or enterprise marketing department on a Business contract, you already want Jasper's brand voice and agents for multichannel content, and AI-answer checks and citation tracking come with that.
  • Byword: you run an SEO or affiliate site or agency that publishes in bulk, prices work per article, and measures AI citations elsewhere.

If your priority in a Jasper vs Byword AI search decision is earning citations, Jasper fits that goal better than Byword. Start a 7-day free trial of DeepSmith to see which of your pages AI cites today and what to publish next.

Frequently asked questions

Not natively. The site links to a separate product, Trakkr, for AI visibility, and its MCP server can expose AI-search citation data. No engines are monitored inside Byword itself.

Does Jasper track AI visibility on every plan?

No. The GEO Hub is part of the Business plan, which is quoted by Jasper's sales team. It covers ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity, and each query or page run uses 10 credits.

Is there an alternative to Jasper and Byword that also gets content cited?

DeepSmith tracks citations across up to ten engines by plan, shows the pages AI cites, and writes the articles that close the gaps. Plans start at $99 a month with a 7-day free trial.
