How to Spot and Fix AI Slop: The Patterns That Make Content Feel Generated

You have a draft. The grammar is clean, the headings look right, and yet every paragraph feels padded and interchangeable. That gap between "correct" and "worth reading" is what people mean by AI slop, and it is fixable in a single working session.

Here is what you'll do. You'll mark four recurring AI content patterns, remove AI filler that does no work, and rewrite what survives around a real action or distinction. You need the draft, a copy you can edit, a find function, and a few minutes to read out loud.

What AI slop actually is (and what it is not)

AI slop is a quality label, not an accusation. It describes low to mid quality content made quickly and cheaply with generative AI, across text, images, audio, or video. For a blog draft, narrow it further: prose that supplies the shape of an explanation without enough distinct thought inside it.

Four terms get mixed together, so let's keep them apart.

  • AI-assisted content describes how a piece was made. A person can brainstorm, draft, or copyedit with a model and still publish something sharp.
  • AI-generated content also describes production method. It says nothing about quality by itself.
  • AI slop is a reader's judgment. The prose feels generic, padded, or mechanically organized.
  • An AI writing tell is a surface pattern you can revise. It is not proof that a model wrote anything.

A human writer can produce all of these habits with no AI anywhere near the file. A model can produce clean, useful prose. So the goal is not to catch anyone and not to beat a detector. The goal is simpler: make every passage earn its space.

One rule carries the whole edit. If removing a word, phrase, or sentence does not remove a meaning, an action, a distinction, or a needed relationship, cut it.

The four AI writing tells you're hunting

Before the steps, get the four AI writing tells in your head. These are the AI content patterns you'll be marking all the way through.

Empty transitions. A connector announces movement without naming a relationship. Words to inspect: moreover, furthermore, additionally, consequently, notably, that said, in conclusion, and phrases like "it is important to note." These are inspection terms, not banned words.

Reflexive hedging. Uncertainty words stacked as a default politeness rather than a real limit. Think "could potentially," "may possibly," "it may be the case that." The problem is usually the cluster, not one word.

Listicle padding. A list, its introduction, or its recap creating the look of thorough coverage without distinct items. Five bullets that are synonyms are still one point.

Rule-of-three overuse. Three matching parts used because the shape sounds complete. "Clear, concise, and compelling." The rule of three is a real rhetorical tool. It becomes a tell when it turns into a default ending.

Research supports treating these as prompts for a scan rather than as laws. One open-access study comparing human writing with six instruction-tuned models found consistent grammatical and stylistic differences, with model output leaning noun-heavy and informationally dense. A separate news-text comparison found less sentence-length variation in model output than in human writing under its test conditions. Both studies warn against generalizing beyond what they tested, and neither hands you an authorship test.

The hedging evidence is genuinely mixed, which matters for how you edit. One comparison of AI-generated and human essays reported more hedging words in the AI group, but the difference was not statistically significant in that sample. The larger style study found the behavior varied by model: two GPT-4o variants used softeners more often than human text while the Llama 3 variants avoided them. So audit hedge clusters. Do not blacklist "may."

Step 1: Set the substance test before you edit

Do not open the draft and start hunting for banned words. That is how good sentences get deleted and bad paragraphs survive.

Instead, write two things at the top of your working copy: the one question this article answers, and the one action or distinction the reader should leave with. Then go paragraph by paragraph and write a plain one-sentence summary of each in the margin.

How you know it's done: every paragraph has a job you can name. If your margin note says "introduces the topic," "talks about benefits," or "provides information," that paragraph has not earned a job yet. Mark it and move on.

Where people go wrong: they polish filler before deciding what the paragraph is supposed to say. They also mistake a smooth transition for a finished idea. Smooth is not the same as substantive.

Step 2: Mark the four patterns in separate passes

Four passes beat one vague "make this better" pass every time. Categories are how you fix generic AI writing without a blacklist: each one hands you a decision to make instead of a feeling to have.

Work on a copy and use four labels:

  • LP for list padding

Every marked candidate runs through the same loop: if removing it would not remove a meaning, action or relationship, delete it, otherwise keep it and name the relationship, then rewrite the survivor around a verb, an object and the reader's next action before moving to the next candidate.

Step 3: Delete transitions that carry no logic

Take every TR and ask three questions. What relationship is actually here: addition, contrast, cause, sequence, example, or conclusion? Is that relationship clear without the connector? If it isn't clear, can the sentence say it more precisely?

Then work in this order.

  1. Delete the connector when the relationship is already obvious.
  2. Replace it with a precise conjunction or short phrase only when the relationship needs help.
  3. Put the relationship inside the sentence: "Because the paragraph repeats the same point, delete the second sentence."
  4. If the paragraph has no real relationship to the one before it, revise the idea or move the paragraph. A transition cannot paper over a gap in thinking.

Here is the pattern in miniature. Before: "Furthermore, it is important to note that the edit provides several benefits. Additionally, it can improve the overall result." After: "Delete the repeated sentence before polishing the paragraph." The connectors were doing the announcing while the sentences underneath stayed empty.

How you know it's done: every connector left standing names a relationship the reader needs. Someone skimming can tell whether the next sentence adds, contrasts, explains, sequences, or concludes.

Common mistake: swapping "Moreover" for "In addition" and calling it a fix. Synonym swapping keeps the empty structure and just changes its costume. The other failure is the opposite one. Delete every transition and the prose goes choppy. Keep the short ones that carry contrast, cause, or sequence.

Step 4: Resolve hedge stacks

Circle every uncertainty marker: may, might, could, potentially, possibly, generally, arguably, appears to, seems to, tends to. Then ask one question of each. What exactly is uncertain here?

The answer puts each hedge in one of four buckets.

  • No real uncertainty. Delete it. "It is possible to cut the opener" becomes "Cut the opener."
  • Capability. Use a direct verb. "This may help you find filler" becomes "This scan helps you find filler," but only when the sentence describes the method rather than promising a result.
  • Condition. Name the condition. "This could work" becomes "Use this when two list items answer the same question."
  • Evidence or probability. Keep one calibrated qualifier and state the basis nearby. Never replace a missing basis with extra softening.

Before: "This may perhaps be a useful way to potentially improve the clarity of the draft." After: "Use this pass to remove repeated ideas." One sentence apologizes for itself. The other tells you what to do.

A working flag: any sentence with two or more hedge devices, and any paragraph where the main instruction gets softened again and again. That is a house rule for triage, not a validated threshold.

How you know it's done: you can read the main instruction aloud without it apologizing. Every qualifier left has a reason you can explain in plain words.

Common mistake: treating "may," "often," and "generally" as banned AI words, then turning a fair caution into an absolute claim. You are removing reflexive softening and exposing the real condition. You are not making the piece overconfident.

Step 5: Collapse padded lists

Padded lists are the easiest tell to spot once you know the trick. Hide the introduction and read only the items. Then hide the items and read only the introduction. If both say the same thing, one of them goes.

Then interrogate each item with three questions. What distinct question does it answer? What action does it ask for? What would be lost if you merged it with the item above?

The fixes, roughly in order:

  1. Delete the meta-introduction and open with the first useful action. "Here are several key considerations to keep in mind" is packaging.
  2. Merge items that overlap.
  3. Turn a two-item list back into a sentence when scanning doesn't help.
  4. Order genuinely distinct items by the reader's task, not by a generic first-second-third rhythm.
  5. Replace abstract labels with a verb and an object. "Clarity" becomes "State the decision the paragraph supports."
  6. Cut the recap when it just repeats the list. Keep it only when it adds a new decision rule.

Before: "The main qualities to focus on are clarity, concision, usefulness, and effectiveness." After: "Keep a sentence only when it changes the reader's understanding or next action." The decorative list became a test the editor can actually apply.

Pro tip: read every list item with its bold label removed. If the items all sound interchangeable without their labels, the list is packaging rather than substance.

How you know it's done: each item earns its own line because it adds a distinct action, distinction, or decision, and the list is genuinely easier to scan than the same content as prose.

Where people go wrong: they add more bullets to make a section feel comprehensive. Length is not coverage. A list of five synonyms is one point wearing five hats.

Step 6: Break automatic triplets and repetitive rhythm

Highlight every three-part phrase. Three adjectives, three short benefits, three reasons in matching grammar, "not X, not Y, but Z" showing up in section after section.

Keep the triplet when all three parts are genuinely distinct, when the reader benefits from seeing all three, or when the parallel grammar clarifies a comparison. Cut or change it when the third item adds nothing, when the adjectives are generic praise, or when several subsections lean on the same shape.

Your options when it fails the test: keep the strongest item and drop the decorative pair, swap the third item for a concrete consequence the reader actually needs, vary the count (two is often enough, one is often stronger), or turn the triplet into an action.

Before: "The final draft should be clear, concise, and compelling." After: "The final draft should tell the reader what to do next." One is a slogan. The other is checkable.

While you're here, read adjacent paragraphs aloud and listen for identical cadences. Uniform paragraph architecture is its own tell: broad claim, three points, mini-summary, repeat. Treat that as a rhythm problem to fix, not as evidence about who wrote it.

How you know it's done: no triplet remains that you could paste into a different article without changing a word.

Where people go wrong: they force awkward variation or delete a parallel list that was doing real work. The target is automatic symmetry, not all symmetry.

Step 7: Rewrite the survivors around concrete work

Deleting is half the job. The other half is rewriting the sentence that was carrying the real point underneath all that filler.

For each surviving sentence, find the subject, the verb, the object, and the consequence for the reader. Prefer a concrete verb over a noun phrase. Prefer a specific action over an abstract quality label. Strip the throat-clearing before you add any new wording.

Four transformations cover most cases:

  • Meta opener plus broad noun becomes verb plus object.
  • "It may be possible to X" becomes "X" or "Use X when Y."
  • Three abstract benefits become "the reader can do X."
  • A generic conclusion becomes "the next action is X."

In practice: "In order to begin the process of identifying filler, it is important to first review the draft" becomes "Review the draft for sentences that add no action or distinction." Same meaning, half the words, and now it tells you what to do.

One guardrail. Do not add specifics just to make a sentence sound human. A surface edit must preserve the draft's actual meaning and must never invent a fact to fill the space you just cleared.

Step 8: Run a final subtraction and read it aloud

One last pass, by category: transitions, qualifiers, list packaging, triplets, restatements, abstract noun phrases. Then read the piece aloud, or let your device read it to you. Your ear catches padding your eye has already forgiven.

Finish by comparing the revised copy against the original, so you can confirm a deletion didn't take a necessary condition or relationship with it.

Check these before you call it done:

  • The opening answers the reader's question with no preamble.
  • Each section puts a direct answer or action near its top.
  • No transition survives purely to create flow.
  • No hedge stack hides a decision.
  • Every list item is distinct, and every retained triplet earns its three parts.
  • No paragraph repeats its heading or the paragraph before it.
  • The prose sounds deliberate when read aloud, without needing random quirks to prove a human was there.

That last point matters more than it looks. Google's own guidance on helpful content asks whether a page was made to help people rather than to game a search engine, and a reader can feel the difference long before any system measures it.

Where people go wrong: they stop after deleting words. Subtraction alone leaves a shorter version of the same empty paragraph.

Score it so the pass is repeatable

Scan the same way twice and you have a habit. Scan it differently every time and you have a mood, and a mood will not fix generic AI writing across a team. Give each section a score per pattern, using separate scores for TR, H, LP, and T3.

Never combine those four numbers into one "AI probability." A high score tells you a category needs revision. It tells you nothing about who wrote the draft.
