Clearscope tracks how often your brand is mentioned in AI answers, but its help with optimizing a draft for those answers is only partial. Semrush Content Toolkit (ContentShake AI) is the reverse: it checks drafts against AI-search criteria and cannot track AI answers at all. Each one covers half of getting cited. DeepSmith covers both halves, since it tracks mention and citation rates and the pages AI cites, then writes AEO-formatted articles grounded in Deep IQ to close the gaps.
Getting cited in AI answers has two parts. You shape your pages so an AI engine can lift an answer from them, and you check whether it worked. Clearscope vs Semrush Content Toolkit for AI search comes down to which of those two parts each tool can do. This piece covers that one job, and the full comparison of the two vendors covers the rest. DeepSmith sits next to both as a tool that handles the two parts together.
Clearscope vs Semrush Content Toolkit for AI citations: the short answer

Clearscope

Clearscope is a content optimization tool built around a Content Grade, which scores a draft on its use of terms taken from the top-ranking pages for a query. It added Query Tracking in July 2026, and that is the part that matters here. Query Tracking shows a mention percentage for each query, for your own domain and up to five competitor domains, as a rolling average of the 21 most recent responses with a 90-day trend. The pricing page names ChatGPT and Gemini, and product pages add Claude, so it isn't clear which engines each plan covers. Essentials includes 50 tracked queries and Business includes 300.
Its help with shaping content for AI answers is lighter. AI Term Presence shows which terms appear in Gemini and GPT responses for your target query, and query fan-out data shows the web searches AI platforms run. Clearscope says this helps content get cited, but that is a vendor claim, and it doesn't publish how it collects AI answers. Our Clearscope review covers the rest of the product. Clearscope is rated 4.9/5 on G2 from 92 reviews as of September 2026, and reviewers' most common reservation is price.
Semrush Content Toolkit

Semrush Content Toolkit is the product that used to be called ContentShake AI. It finds topics, builds SEO briefs, generates articles and repurposes them. For this job the relevant part is the Content Optimizer, which gives a Content Score that combines SEO and AI visibility criteria. Its AI SEO checks look at things like authorship credentials, natural question-and-answer formatting and structural summaries, which are the kinds of signals that help content surface in tools such as ChatGPT and Perplexity. It also offers a one-click rewrite with a side-by-side diff. Whether those changes raise citations is a vendor claim.
The toolkit does not track brand mentions or citations in AI answers. Semrush sells that separately as the AI Visibility Toolkit. Base costs $60 per month billed annually, with a 7-day trial. Its 7.2/10 rating on Info-Tech comes from 7 reviews, and the G2 and Capterra ratings you see for Semrush cover the whole suite, so they say little about this product.
DeepSmith: the alternative that tracks and writes

The gap both tools leave is that neither one connects the measurement to the writing. Clearscope tells you how often you're mentioned, but its AEO help is partial. Semrush Content Toolkit optimizes drafts, but it can't show you what AI engines answered. A direct DeepSmith vs Clearscope comparison goes further into the grading side. DeepSmith tracks and produces in one platform. Its AI Visibility module reports mention rate, citation rate and share of voice, with per-prompt answer history, a Pages view of which of your pages AI actually cites, and the competitor pages winning citations for the same prompts.
Opportunity Agents turn those gaps into content ideas, each one carrying the data point that justifies it. The Writer then produces a finished article with AEO formatting built in, meaning citation-ready structure, crisp answers near the top and clear headings. Deep IQ grounds each article in your product, persona and voice, so the page states your real facts instead of generic copy.

Pro is $99 per month, or $80 per month billed annually, and includes 50 tracked prompts, 20 articles a month and ChatGPT tracking. Grow at $199 adds Perplexity, Scale at $399 adds Gemini, and Enterprise covers all ten engines. Every plan starts with a 7-day free trial. DeepSmith is rated 4.8/5 on G2.
Optimizing drafts for AI answers
Semrush Content Toolkit leads here, because its optimizer checks drafts against AI-search criteria directly. Clearscope's signals come from watching which terms show up in AI responses, which is useful input but doesn't tell you what to change in the structure of a page. Both companies describe the citation benefit as an outcome they expect, and neither record shows a measured result, so I'd treat the optimization as a sensible checklist and not a guarantee. For how to structure a page yourself, there is a guide to answer-first content for AI citations, and the AI citation signals behind it are worth reading too. If AEO is new to you, a plain introduction to answer engine optimization covers the basics.
What DeepSmith does: the Writer builds AEO formatting into the article as it is produced, so there is no separate optimization pass on a finished draft. Because the same platform tracks the prompts you care about, the article is written for a prompt it has data on.
Tracking mentions and citations
Clearscope wins this one outright, since Semrush Content Toolkit has no tracking. Clearscope's tracking is built around mention percentage per query, with competitor comparison and the three most recent responses shown word for word. A product-news post also describes an AI Citations Content View that ties tracked pages to the citations AI engines gave them. The limits are that it isn't clear which engines each plan covers, and it doesn't publish how or how often answers are collected. In most cases that is enough to spot a trend, but you would want to confirm the details before treating a single week's number as settled. If tracking is your main need, a wider roundup of AEO tools that track AI citations may help, and before rewriting anything it helps to audit your content for AI citations.
What DeepSmith does: it tracks mention rate and citation rate for each prompt, shows which of your pages AI cites and what share of your citations each one holds, and lists the competitor pages that win the same prompts. The Discover Prompts feature starts you with a set of prompts built from your product, persona and buyer-stage context.
Pricing and value
Semrush Content Toolkit is cheaper to start, at $60 per month billed annually, though the month-to-month price wasn't published when the pricing page was checked. Base includes 5 SEO-boosted articles per month, and 10 more cost $30 per month. Clearscope costs $129 per month for Essentials and $399 for Business, with unlimited users, 20 Drafts a month on both plans and a 14-day trial. Its tracking is included in that price. With Semrush, tracking is a separate product, so the $60 only covers the optimization half. Reviewers of both tools mention usage limits as the most common constraint. If price is the sticking point, there are other Clearscope alternatives to weigh.
What DeepSmith does: one plan covers tracking and article production. Pro at $99 per month includes 50 tracked prompts and 20 articles, and there are no long-term contracts or cancellation fees.
From insight to action
Neither tool closes the loop alone. Clearscope gives you the insight, then leaves the work to a grader inside Google Docs or WordPress, with no documented way to publish from the tool. Semrush Content Toolkit gives you the action, with optimization, repurposing and publishing to WordPress, but it has no view of what AI actually said. Semrush says the optimizer can connect to data from its AI Visibility Toolkit, which would mean buying the second product as well.
What DeepSmith does: the loop runs inside one platform. Tracking shows a gap, an Opportunity Agent turns it into an idea with the evidence attached, the Writer produces the article, and you review it in Produced Content and publish to WordPress, Webflow, Strapi, Sanity or Contentful. Autowrite can run the writing step on a schedule with no one in the app.
Which should you choose
Picking Clearscope or Semrush Content Toolkit for AI search mostly depends on which half of the job you already have covered.
- DeepSmith fits teams that want to measure AI citations and publish the content that earns them without stitching tools together, from solo marketers to agencies running several brands.
- Clearscope fits teams that write their own drafts, already like term-based grading, and want mention tracking included in the same subscription.
- Semrush Content Toolkit fits individual marketers and small teams that want guided drafting and AI-search checks at a lower entry price and already measure AI visibility elsewhere.
